Office of the Dean of Students

Student Conduct

The Office of the Dean of Students is responsible for administering and interpreting the University of Northern Iowa Student Conduct Code. This includes receiving reports of alleged misconduct, ensuring that students receive due process and fair treatment throughout the hearing process, and maintaining students' disciplinary records.

When incidents happen and University of Northern Iowa students are involved, the Office of the Dean of Students is the main university entity that works with students to resolve disciplinary matters. Students, faculty and staff who believe there has been a violation can contact our office to discuss options available for reporting incidents or can report the allegation of student misconduct online.

What is a Student Concern?

A student concern is a situation or experience that inhibits the student's ability to function well in the university environment. Student concerns may include but are not limited to:

A health or other condition that requires a long absence from the university.
A mental or emotional health condition that causes the student to be a threat to self or others.
Behavior that is disruptive to the educational environment.
A traumatic event experienced by a student.

If danger is immediate, call 911 or on campus 9-911. If you believe there is an urgent situation with a student, call the Counseling Center at 273-2676 and they will consult with you about what to do.

Report a Concern About a Student

Faculty, staff, students or others who are concerned about the behavior of a student that is potentially dangerous to self or others, or is disruptive are encouraged to report or discuss the concern with an appropriate university representative. If you have a concern about a student, confidentiality laws don't prevent you from reporting the concern. Urgent or crisis situations may include, but are not limited to:

A risk of suicide
A threat of harm to others
Severely disorganized, psychotic or out-of-control behavior
Trauma, such as sexual assault or the death or injury of someone close

You may report a concern about a student with the Student Concern Form.

Office of Compliance and Equity Management

The Office of Compliance and Equity Management (OCEM) serves faculty, staff and students to promote a safe environment and community through training, education and prevention work. The office oversees specific university policies that protects faculty, staff and student rights against discrimination, harassment and sexual misconduct. Individuals who have experienced discrimination or harassment can work with the OCEM to explore resources and reporting options.

Anyone who has experienced, witnessed or learned of a discrimination, harassment or sexual misconduct incident should consider reporting this to OCEM.

Report an Incident of Bias or Discrimination

A bias-related incident is any word or action directed toward an individual or group based upon actual or perceived identity characteristics or background of a group or person that is harmful or hurtful. Some bias-related incidents may be contrary to law or policy, while some may be speech protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States. You may report a bias incident with the Incident Reporting Form.

Report an Incident of Sexual Misconduct or Sexual Assault

Violence Intervention Services provides comprehensive support and services for students harmed by violence and leads university efforts toward creating an environment that is intolerant of violence and supportive of victims. You may anonymously report sexual misconduct with the Incident Reporting Form.
